Family Care Foundation partner Accao Voluntario em Mocambique
AIDS Awareness Prison Program
Accao Voluntario em Mocambique (AVM) is dedicated to helping the neglected and abused street children of Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique. AVM strives to improve the quality of life for these young people with programs that house, feed, educate, and offer comfort, stability and hope. Most of these children are either orphans or victims of extreme poverty that makes it impossible for their parent(s) to care for them any longer.
Accao Voluntario em Mocambique was granted permission by the Ministry of Justice to conduct AIDS Awareness seminars and Bible classes with 2,500 inmates of the Central prison. Some of those incarcerated are just waiting their day in court for petty crimes, such as stealing cell phones-while others are long-term prisoners. All live in conditions unacceptable in the West.
AVM also works with the orphans at Mother Teresa's "Sisters of Charity" facility, which includes an additional wing devoted entirely to people suffering with AIDS.
